Today’s Affirmation: My last breakfast with ”Ma’Dear”

Winnie "Doll" Lockett

The times we spend together with love ones mean so much. Many times we take these moments for granted. We can’t imagine the life / time value of these precious moments. During a visit to my home town of Marietta, TX I was blessed to spend a night with my grandmother Winnie Lockett (aka… “Ma’Dear”). Although Ma’Dear was up in age she was still able to get around and take care of herself. We sat together and watched a couple of television shows. We later pulled out scrap books and began to identify family members, many of them had long since past on. While flipping through the scrap books Ma’Dear begin to explain our heritage, history & honor.

As I was preparing to leave the next morning, Ma’Dear offered to “fix me some breakfast.” I told her not to trouble herself and I soon departed down that old dirt drive way reflecting on our visit together.

Ma’Dear passed a few years later and I often reflect on that visit. I have “what if” moments from time to time. What if I had allowed her to fix that final breakfast for me? How would the eggs, bacon, grits and cat head biscuits taste? As she encouraged me to eat as much as I wanted, how would the kitchen smell? Wow…what a meal that would have been.

Today take some time and enjoy a meal with family members and friends because it could be your last meal together.
